This is the world's largest online collection of found grocery lists. In fact, we wrote the book on found grocery lists. Why? Other peoples' grocery lists are fascinating. Plus, the internet is a great place to do  stupid  interesting things. So far 1,600 funny, crazy, weird, sad and/or mundane discarded scraps of paper have been posted. Have a look!

Grocery shopping far from jolly time
"Grocery shopping is one of those adulthood chores done with great begrudging. Even a masochist would find examining multiple sour cream expiration dates an unpleasant way to spend Saturday afternoon. However, the real pain starts with a list. Call me obtuse, or simply a guy, but I need grocery guidance. If you want a can of diced not chopped tomatoes, put it in writing, along with the GPS coordinates in the appropriate aisle."

Think the best grocery deals are at Wal-Mart?
"Michael Berberick and Montelle LeVering have news for you. The Dublin couple have developed a system that they say saves people between 40 percent and 50 percent off Wal-Mart prices, and 75 percent to 85 percent off regular prices at traditional grocery stores such as Giant Eagle and Kroger. For $15 a month, The Grocery Advantage provides members, via the Internet, a weekly list of 50 grocery items that are the biggest bargains in central Ohio, once sale prices and coupons are taken into account."

A clickable shopping list from Grocery Shopping Network
"The old fashioned grocery list is about to get a major upgrade.Grocery Shopping Network of Minneapolis has developed software that connects consumers with retailers and manufacturers via the Internet. Beginning next month, consumers who visit the websites of participating supermarkets will be able to make personalized shopping lists, research product information and receive coupons and other promotions based on their previous purchases."

Super Suppers includes every ingredient, even time
"These days it's got to be easy, and it's got to be quick. And more and more it's got to be something a notch above a TV dinner and something more healthy than a trip to the fast food strip of culinary horrors that surround suburban neighborhoods. Ann Nikirk thinks part of the answer is Super Suppers, the semi-do-it-yourself, food prep service she recently opened in Sherman."

Pyramid tailor-made for your health
"The USDA's familiar food pyramid, the symbol of a healthy diet for more than a decade, has gotten its own Web site and a long overdue facelift. Instead of featuring examples of foods from all five food groups, the new pyramid unveiled Tuesday has been streamlined with color-coded vertical bands representing each food group plus oils. And to emphasize the need to combine exercise with diet, there's a figure of a person climbing steps up the side of the pyramid and a new slogan, 'Steps to a Healthier You.'"

17 tips for buying organic food on the cheap
"Do you enjoy the taste of organic food but you're turned off by the price? If you're willing to do some creative shopping and cooking, you can enjoy the freshness and goodness of organic foods without breaking your food budget. Step one is giving up your dependence on conventional supermarkets."

I am also dull!
From the Dull Men's Club: "Find out what Dull Men collect... Thanks to a reader's letter, we searched the web for collections of grocery shopping lists left in shopping carts."

Nootropic: Disassembled #3
"Lean Cuisine Sweet and Sour Chicken has been disassembled with extreme prejudice. I like their new packaging, but that doesn't make the food any better. Here are the ingredients I found..."

I'm just such a wacky dude!
"Wacky dude Bill Keaggy has amassed more than 700 grocery lists. How they wind up in his hands is rather mysterious: people find them and mail them to him, or he collects them from parking lots and linoleum floors of grocery stores. Laugh at the typos (the word 'banana' daunts just about everyone) or the bizarre items people feel they need, and closely examine these various specimens of human culture. With pages and pages of grocery lists, humorously organized into 'Top 10 favorites' with witty quips, there are enough distractions to last till May."

The Shopping List Compendium
Cool, another list collection! "This site has been inspired by the kind people who abandon their shopping lists at the end of a shopping trip. I collect them. Not the people, the lists. Each list I find is scanned, and analysed to present a socio-psychological profile of the person who abandoned the list. The result is then posted on the Shopping List Compendium website for your enjoyment and/or confusion."

The frugal college student's guide
"The other night in my scriptwriting class, the professor discussed interviewing basics. 'Record the interview,' was her last tip. This advice brought scores of comments from my classmates. 'I'm a college student,' said one young lady. 'I can't even afford to get my teeth checked out.' 'Someone you know has a tape recorder,' the professor replied. 'Borrow one from a classmate, and buy them a Happy Meal.' I understand the financial concerns of my classmates. For years, friends have asked how I find so many good deals. Savings are all around. You simply have to know where to look." And here's Part 2)

Twist on 'envelope method' could help save you money
"Do you always forget to bring your coupons with you when you go to the store? Here's a neat little trick to make sure you never forget."

Cart crackdown
"'We'll be targeting downtown again,' says Officer Steve Turner. He and Detective Melvin Lucas sit in front of a dry-erase board where there's a sketch of the stolen merchandise they hope to recover today. There, amid more white space than on a supermodel's grocery list, is a drawing of a shopping cart in green marker. Next to the doodle, someone has written a warning: 'Driver Beware.' 'The main purpose of this program is to get shopping carts off the street,' Turner says." (Use BugMeNot to login.)

A battle plan for weekly grocery store trip
"When you enter your friendly neighborhood grocery store, do you sense that you've somehow stumbled into enemy territory? Do the fight or flight hairs on the back of your neck stand up? If not, then perhaps they should especially when you're working to eat healthy and be fit. 'Enemy' may be a bit strong, but 'friend' is an even greater stretch of the imagination. Grocery stores, after all, are in the business of making money. Whether you trim down, reach your goal weight or look good in your Speedos is the least of their concerns."

Trader Joe's shoppers in the market for love
"Grocery list at Trader Joe's: hormone-free milk (check), organic creamy tomato soup (check), blue corn tortilla chips (check), and the cute guy reaching for the frozen chicken masala?"

Guys can cook: Website, fundraiser prove it!
"I've always admired my brother-in-law, Dan. About 10 years ago, after 25 years on Wall Street, he swapped roles with my sister and become a full-time, stay-at-home dad. Though an excellent and loving father, he lacked certain things in the culinary department: creativity, passion, and an awareness of the flavor-enhancing qualities of herbs and spices. His weekly menus-- repeated for months without the subtlest variation-- consisted of hamburgers, frozen pizzas, chicken nuggets, and cheese quesadillas. I could tell he was as bored as his three children and hard-working wife, but being a guy he was hard-wired to stick with the program. Dan could've certainly benefited from a new, locally based website dedicated entirely to dads who manage some domestic duties: Daddycancook.com."

'What of the Night': Djuna Barnes: Her Life, Her Love, Her Grocery List
The New York Times > Theater Review | Djuna Barnes: Her Life, Her Love, Her Grocery List: "When the most thought-provoking moment in a tribute to a colorful figure of 20th-century letters is the ordering of groceries, it's safe to say that trouble abounds. 'What of the Night,' a solo show starring Jane Alexander as Djuna Barnes, is a surefire soporific until this arresting segment, when the aged, reclusive Barnes, apropos of nothing, picks up the telephone in her Greenwich Village apartment and reads off a list of necessities topped by mint-flavored milk of magnesia, oranges and smelts."

Downtime
The site seems to have been down from about midnight to 10 a.m. this morning, apparently a problem at the hosting company. Sorry.

Organic shoppers pay a price
"Sandra Bizier has seen her grocery bills grow ever since she began shopping for organic products, but she said the added expense is worth it. 'Health is more important. Why do we need to be using all these chemicals?' asked the Trumbull resident Thursday as she loaded her car with groceries purchased at the Fairfield Trader Joe's, a retail chain that specializes in organic and eclectic food products. 'It costs more, but I'm willing to make that sacrifice. It's sad that we have to make that choice.'"

A List Of 30 Things We Love
"Our urge to compile lists probably starts at age 40-something. If you are thoroughly convinced you routinely kept lists in your 20s or 30s -- it didn't happen. But the value of a list is no longer underrated. It's our shorthand for long-term thinking. A list focuses us, sets priorities, gets things done: the grocery list, the errands-to-do list, the New Year's resolutions list (hah! lists get old if you plan too far out)."

Grocery list and sketch
"Grocery list and sketch of me ["Brad Thompson] found after one of my shows. Must have been pretty bored. Ink on napkin."

Duplicates?
Hello. If anyone out there ever notices duplicated lists on the site just let me know. I appreciate the emails from those who've alerted me to duplicates. I guess my filing system is a work in progress. (UPDATE 6 Apr 2005: I fixed a few of them. Thanks for the heads-up.)

Cash saving grocery tips
"...the basic aim is to let you to be able to make a plan for yourself with which you can save cash... Try using store brands instead of name brands. If you MUST use name brands, check out bent and dent shops and use coupons or purchase loss leaders. Avoid convenience foods for the most part. It is usually cheaper and healthier to prepare food from scratch..."
