Oil's ripple effect
"You already pay more to drive and to heat and cool your home. Now get ready to pay more for just about everything else. Prices for all sorts of goods made from oil and natural gas byproducts are expected to rise in coming months as petrochemical shortages and high costs left in the wake of the Gulf Coast hurricanes begin filtering through the economy."

No barriers -- ethnic markets welcome you
"Step into any small ethnic deli or market, where customers gather not only for sustenance but to nourish the spirit of their homeland, and English is most likely not the predominant language you will hear. Adventurous cooks simply consider this blend of sights and sounds to be another reason to try a new recipe. Like spices and seasonings, it's part of what intrigues them to give the dish a try."

Real men push carts
"There are certain differences between the sexes that are so self-evident they require no research projects to validate them. It's obvious, for example, that women cry more readily than men; that women, on the average, live longer than men; that women go to supermarkets more often than men. Well, wait a minute..."

Try these tips for a moist turkey dinner
"Now you're ready to make your shopping list. You may want to divide your list into two categories: perishable and non-perishable. In this way, you can make two shopping trips. Do your non-perishable shopping two or even three weeks ahead of time, then you'll only have to get the perishables when the supermarket is crowded and the lines are long. (Remember, we're trying to minimize stress.)"

Tips for Halloween
"When shopping for a costume, wig or accessories, be sure to look for those with a label clearly indicating they are flame resistant... An adult should always accompany young children as they trick-or-treat. Review the route with older children and agree on a specific time when they should return home."

The grocery game
"Carol Ann Zelley used to hate grocery shopping. Now, it's a challenge: She likes to see how much money she can save each week playing the Grocery Game. The Grocery Game is an online service that tracks advertised and unadvertised sale items at select grocery stores nationwide, then alerts subscribers whether coupons are available for those items -- as well as where to find the coupons."

10 things you shouldn't buy new
"Few people really enjoy wasting their hard-earned money, but many of us do it every day by buying new. We could do our pocketbooks, and the environment, a big favor by opting to be the second owner of some of the stuff we buy."

Healthy eating starts with healthy food shopping
"The following tips can help guide you through the grocery store to make healthy food choices: Stay outside -- the departments around the perimeter of the store tend to contain the fresh food. This is where fruits, veggies, meats, dairy products and breads are generally found. Spend more time here than in the center aisles, which have more of the processed foods."

Excellent decoupage grocery list table
New grocerylists.org reader Rose, who works at a Whole Foods in Texas, sent us a photo of the amazing table she made. "Whenever I go grocery shopping, I forget what I need and end up with no food at my apartment, only candles and bubble bath. I have decided to decoupage an ugly little table with shopping lists. That way, when I sit down to think of what I need, I will have a guide of suggestions right there! A very nice customer overheard us talking about my project at work, and donated her list the next time she shopped with us. She also wrote down your website for me, so here I am!" Awesome. Thanks, Rose!
